In
Greek mythology, following the defeat of the Titans the gods asked Zeus
to create a group of divinities to sing of the victory. Zeus laid with
Mnemosyne for nine nights, after which the nine muses were born. The Muses
were thought to be responsable for insipiring mortal song, poetry, drama,
and dance..thus the custom of artists asking for the protection and insipration
of the Muses prior to a performance. They are often seen in the company
of Apollo and Pegasus. Sappho was considered by many to be the Tenth Muse.
We derive our word "museum" from the Greek term "museion"
for a temple dedicated to the Muses. |
